What is your area of specialty – how do you best help your clients?

• Specialize in Governmental Auditing, specifically School District auditing and Federal Compliance Auditing.
• Also work with Municipalities and Not-For-Profits.

What are your top 5 strengths? What is your favorite strength?

• Developer
• Connectedness
• Responsibility
• Belief
• Adaptability

Developer is my favorite strength. I enjoy transferring knowledge and seeing someone understand something from a different point of view or perspective.

How do you like to give back to the community?

• Serve as the Treasurer of the Thornapple Valley Baseball League.
• I enjoy serving on a board for an activity that I enjoy, that is community based, that also has a broad social impact for kids.

What are your superpowers – something you’re good at that others should know about?

One thing that I feel I am really good at is looking at something in an analytical fashion in a way that someone hasn’t yet perceived. Another skill I feel I am proud to maintain is my technical skill related to governmental accounting. It’s not always easy to understand the way governmental accounting works, so to help clients through that process is very rewarding for me.

Accomplishment you’re proud of?

From the professional side, the one accomplishment I think I am most proud of is how much I have come to enjoy the public speaking/presentation side of my job. It is definitely one thing that I was not comfortable with early on, but the more I have learned and presented, the more I feel comfortable and confident with the material I present. It has never been easy, and it will continue to be a challenge, but it’s a challenge I am willing to continue to accept.

Tell us about your life outside of work (family/pets/sports/activities/interests/hobbies)

• Wife – Kristen (married since August of 2004)
• Will – 12
• Leah – 10
• Beckett – 7
• JJ – 5
• Owen (our dog) – turns 17 in April

Favorite activity outside of work is attending as many sporting events for my kids, as physically possible. I just enjoy watching them compete and have fun with their teammates. 2nd favorite activity would be finding hiking/outdoor opportunities with my family on our vacations.

What is your favorite part of working at the firm?

Hands down, the people I work with. In the auditing world we tend to spend a lot of time together and the fact we all get along makes the difficult days, less difficult because we are all in it together! I even find joy in the interactions with people I don’t work with on a daily basis. It’s a joy to be a part of something where I get along with everyone I come in contact with.
